1980年代のイタリア・ナポリ、サッカー好きな少年ファビエット・スキーザ(フィリッポ・スコッティ)が暮らす街に、伝説のサッカー選手ディエゴ・マラドーナがやって来る。思いがけない英雄の訪問にファビエットも街の人々と共に喜ぶが、突然の悲劇が彼を襲う。予想外の事態にぼうぜんとし、苦しみながらも周囲の人々に支えられ、彼は前を向いて歩みだす。

    1987年4月5日の日曜日、パオロ・ソレンティーノは、地元ナポリのエンポリとの試合を観戦し、ヒーローであるディエゴ・マラドーナの活躍を見るという夢を実現させました。ソレンティーノは、その週末を両親と山の中の家で過ごすつもりでした。しかし、マラドーナのいるナポリは、セリエA初優勝の途上にありました。幼いパオロは、初めて一人で試合を見に行くことを許されました。その夜、ソレンティーノの17歳の誕生日を1ヵ月後に控えた両親は、暖房器具の不具合による一酸化炭素のガスで、ベッドの上で亡くなりました。彼はこの映画の制作をこのように語っています。「このような個人的な映画はもう作れないと思う。とても難しかった。20年かかったけど、その間ずっと考えていたんだ。でも、この映画は私に文体の鍵を与えてくれたので、今後とも探求していくつもりだ。」

    パオロ・ソレンティーノによれば、ソレンティーノが自身の経験を映画に託す許可を得たのは、キュアロンのメキシコシティでの子供時代を描いたアルフォンソ・キュアロン監督の『ローマ』（2018年）だったそうです。ソレンティーノは、「個人的でプライベートな映画が、普遍的な物語を語ることができる 」と気づいたそうです。

    パオロ・ソレンティーノは、この映画について、インスピレーションの源であるマラドーナ本人が、この映画を鑑賞するために近くにいてくれなかったことが唯一悔やまれると語っています。マラドーナは、ソレンティーノ監督がサッカー選手と連絡を取って話をする機会を持つ前に、この映画の撮影の1カ月後に亡くなってしまったのです。しかし、2012年にソレンティーノ監督が『グレート・ビューティー』でアカデミー賞国際映画賞を受賞したとき、マラドーナは彼が感謝したうちの一人でした。
